Suwon’s Hwaseong Fortress



What is it?

This is a stone and brick fortress from the Joseon Dynasty that surrounds Suwon City. It was built by King Jeongio for 3 reasons, one is for defense, another is for political basis and the final is to hold the remains of his father. It features 4 gates, artillery towers, and other defense mechanisms. It is protected under the Cultural Heritage Protection Act since it is a state-designated cultural heritage. It is something to go see if you want to look into a piece of history.


Hours:

  • March - October: 9:00 am - 6:00 pm

  • November - February: 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

Cost: 

  1. Suwon Hwaseong Admission

    1. Adults: 1,000 KRW

    2. Teens: 700 KRW

    3. Children: 500 KRW

  2. Hwaseong Haenggyng Palace

    1. Adults: 1,500 KRW

    2. Teens: 1,000 KRW

    3. Children: 800 KRW

  3. Integrated Ticket: Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, Hwaseong Haenggung Palace, Suwon Museum, Suwon Hwaseong Museum

    1. Adults: 3,500 KRW

Q: How to get in for free?

A: Every last Wednesday of the month you can get in for free as it is culture day. Also if you wear Hanbok you can get into Suwon Hwaseong Fortress and Hwaseong Haenggung Palace for free.

How far from Seoul is it? 

Its 30 kilometers (19 miles) from Seoul


How do you get there?

There are 3 main ways you can get to Suwon from Seoul, each different in length and cost.

  1. Subway

    1. This is the main way people travel to Suwon if they are on a budget. From the center of Seoul, it takes about an hour to get to Suwon.

    2. Taking line 1 to Suwon station is the best way to get here. When boarding the train make sure it is going in the direction of Sinchang.

    3. Cost: This will vary depending on how you pay and where you are coming from. 

  2. Nooriro Train

    1. This is a faster way to get to Suwon, only taking about 34 minutes and is nonstop from Seoul Station to Suwon Station.

    2. This is more comfortable than the subway but more expensive.

    3. Cost:

      1. Adult: 2,700 KRW

      2. Child: 1,300 KRW

  3. KTX

    1. This is the fastest way to get to Suwon and only takes about 25 minutes. This also departs from Seoul Station and stops at Suwon Station.

    2. Cost:

      1. 1st class

        1. Adult: 13,000 KRW

        2. Children: 9,000 KRW

      2. Standard class

        1. Adult 8,400 KRW

        2. Child: 4,200 KRW


There are many different things to do when visiting the fortress. If you just want to walk around the fortress, you can do that but there are also multiple different activities that run throughout the day for you to do. Some of them may have an additional cost but are all highly recommended. While you are visiting the fortress learn about the tragic history of it and visit all 4 gates.
