Food in Korea

Food in Korea
1. Street Food
2. Traditional Food
3. Desserts

Eating in Korea is seen as a group thing, it is hard to find a place that allows you to eat alone. This is very evident in Korean BBQ and when you get fried chicken, you will often order something that is meant to be shared. You can go to famous chicken restaurants like Moms Touch or order chicken to public areas like parks by the Han River. This is very popular with young people and is highly recommended to do at some point. Korean fried chicken is something you need to have when in Korea.

Street Food

Another thing to try is Korea is street food. This will vary depending on where you are in Korea but in Seoul, there is a wide variety you can try. One of the most popular things among both locals and foreigners is tteokbokki. This dish is rice cakes cooked in gochujang (a spicy but sweet Korean sauce). They are delicious to eat but can be messy so make sure to eat carefully, these are also not for those who do not like spice either. A popular way to eat them is with cheese but it is also fine on its own.

Hotteok is the Korean doughnut and is a must-buy treat. They may look more like pancakes to Americans but do not be fooled they taste like a doughnut. They are filled with cinnamon and brown sugar that melts in your mouth, it's very similar to mini donuts you get at a state fair, just flip since the sugar is inside. If you love mini donuts this is something you need to have, it's such a good treat as a dessert or even as something to warm you up in the winter.

Traditional Food

As for traditional food, one of the most popular is bibimbap and you have probably heard of it or even had it before. This dish varies by region but you can also get different versions at a restaurant depending on what you want. The traditional dish is a mix of rice, beef, vegetables, gochujang, and a fried egg. For those who are picky eaters, this is a good dish to start with if you do not know what you will like.

You may be surprised but Korea also has a lot of good soups as well. One of the most popular is seolleongtang which is ox bone soup. The soup is made with not only ox meat but also the bone. The broth is a milky white color that is very beautiful and you eat it with lots of rice. The soup is very popular all around Seoul for its texture and tasteful broth.

Desserts

To finish the food section we will talk about desserts. Bingsu is one of the most popular Korean desserts. It is perfect in the summer as it is shaved ice with condensed milk and whatever topping you chose. One of the most popular in Korea is red bean bingsu or patbingsu, however, there is a wide variety of toppings for those who don’t like beans. This dessert is commonly found at cafes and restaurants and is definitely something you should try.

Another popular dessert is bungeo-ppang or the traditional fish-shaped pastry. In the past, it was sold with red bean paste but now it comes in a variety of flavors like chocolate and cream. Some places on the street even sell it with ice cream and honey in the summer. This is a treat you can take on the go and you will love it.
