Visit Local Markets in Korea

You may ask why we recommend going to market in Korea, they should be similar to ones in the United States, right? No, they aren’t, in fact, they are so much more. Going to markets in Korea is a completely different experience that you will want to have. You may be used to the farmer’s markets in the states but they pale in comparison to these markets. As mentioned in Top 10 Areas and Places to Visit in Seoul, the Namdaemun market is one of the best places to visit in Seoul to get just about anything as it's the largest traditional market in Korea.

However, there are also other markets you should visit in Seoul as well. One of these is the Gwangjang market which was established in 1905. While it has a wide variety of products it sells, the market is best known for its food. The market has lines of food vendors on both sides of the pathways. Many have their own unique take on different Korean foods but also have standard treats like bibimbap. You can also find different restaurants here where you can get foods like gimbap which is like sushi but way better. It is a seaweed rice roll made with sesame oil. It is also called drug gimbap as it is very addictive, but it’s completely safe to eat.

The other top market to visit in Seoul is the Noryangjin Fish Market. This market is Seoul’s oldest fish market and is an experience you will not forget. Yes, this market is going to smell fishy, no pun intended, but once you get used to it you will love it. There are very few markets like this in America and even those don’t have some of the sea creatures they have here. The fresh seafood can also be bought and then taken to one of the restaurants to be cooked for you. You will not do something as fresh as this anywhere else. The market is also open 24 hours a day so come at night and see it come to life!

Noryangjin Fish Market

Address: 674 Nodeul-ro, Noryangjin-dong, Dongjak-gu, 서울특별시 South Korea

Hours: all-day but fish auctions are at 3 am

Cost: varies by vendor, make sure to bring cash! Some vendors do not take credit
